Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
