There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.
This past week Trump indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest soon to address the Ukraine conflict.
A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".
The administration did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources claiming the president had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.
Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a peace initiative endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.
"Let it be cut in its current state," he stated.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.
The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.
The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its Western allies.
Zelensky stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.
He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of reports that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he added.
