Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when questioned about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any decision is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he added.
Newsom has emerged as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to cut government money from the state and warned suspending the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," Duffy said, following a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had previously announced he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team responded in a recent statement addressing Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
A this month's survey revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
