Event planners of the year's first Grand Slam have announced the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will pit a dozen non-professionals against top-ranked players in a knockout tournament at Melbourne Park
The Unique Competition Operates
Participants must play 'rock, paper, scissors' to determine who serves or receives, and the player who wins the point will progress to the subsequent phase
The champion of the event will take home approximately half a million pounds
By comparison, players who reached the semi-finals of the men's or women's singles in the previous year's tournament won A$1.1m
Past Comparable Tournaments
The New York major staged a redesigned, standalone combined gender tournament in late summer which motivated top singles players to participate, with the victors receiving one million US dollars
The year's first major held its inaugural quick-fire event earlier this year, but the prize fund was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

Tournament Information
Organizers have not specified precisely how the event will function, but it is projected to emulate a akin setup to this year's edition
The professionals will be permitted to have a single serve and the amateurs on two occasions - as is the usual procedure in traditional tennis
While it is not certain how the pairings will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the site will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the smaller Kia Arena
The final stages will take place in a night session instead of 1pm local time
Competitor Details
Domestic competitors - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the national federation - can compete in 'One Point Slam' competitions at their neighborhood facilities
The winners of the local competitions will then go into a draw, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory chosen to participate in the 'championship round' in a night session on Wednesday, 14 January
There will also be a preliminary competition in December which amateurs, lower ranked pros, famous personalities and sports personalities can participate in
It starts on Monday, 12 January and the successful competitors will qualify for Wednesday's 'grand finale' with the other eight amateurs and elite competitors
"Regardless of your skill level, the ultimate winner will receive the prize. Registrations will begin shortly at clubs nationwide"
Competition planners said there were "additional stars to be revealed shortly", while the official website mentioned "well-known figures" would be participating
