Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the main group to embark on their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might appear unsuited, but the actions of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise started the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and fled to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could help the team reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Explorers and Planners tables.

Fans can look forward to learning which players will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
