Danish individual receives deferred prison term for distributing nude movie clips on Reddit
A Danish man has been found guilty of sharing sexually explicit segments from protected films and television shows on the social media site Reddit.
Based on a law enforcement report obtained by media outlets, the anonymous individual shared 347 video excerpts of nude scenes in a Reddit group he moderated, which were then viewed 4.2 million times.
The country's authorities state he has been handed a seven-month deferred jail term for violating copyright laws.
Legal analysts say the man was charged under a rarely-used provision in Denmark's copyright law, with the court finding that by removing the footage out of their original context, the man had damaged the artists' "ethical entitlements".
He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 terabytes of protected digital content.
From March 2022 to mid-2023, the man known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit scenes including over 100 actresses.
He shared them in the subreddit he was a moderator of.
According to the Denmark's anti-piracy organization The Rights Alliance (TRA), his subreddit had more than 6,000 subscribers and participants were encouraged to request clips of particular actors.
In last year, advocates reported the incident to the police on behalf of the affected artists, directors and production companies, which led to the subreddit being closed down.
Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the actresses whose explicit content were circulated in the group, told Danish media at the period she believed there was a difference between appearing unclothed in a movie and being shown on Reddit.
The actress said the posts constituted "abuse".
'A significant message'
The man was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded guilty to the allegations recently.
In a comment following the verdict, TRA head Maria Fredenslund remarked the decision sent an "important" signal "that infringements of creators' entitlements has repercussions".
The ruling is considered unique in the country for its use of the "moral rights" section of the Danish Copyright Act, which states an creator's creation cannot be used in a way which infringes upon their reputation.
Copyright law specialist a legal scholar informed BBC News the case was "unusual" for its emphasis on the damage to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them financially.
How the case could influence nations abroad is uncertain.
But she added there may be "an increasing number of these actions" in the coming years with the advancement of AI, where "the sanctity of an individual's creative output might be tempered with with greater ease".
