Witness testimonies surfaced of multiple blasts and the sound of low-altitude jets in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of Saturday. The incident has sparked accusations from Venezuela's authorities and demands for diplomatic intervention.
The socialist administration has accused the United States of an act of "imperial aggression," claiming that ex- President Donald Trump supposedly ordered attacks against the South American state. In an formal declaration, the authorities asserted that attacks had targeted the capital and three other states: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua state.
"The primary goal of these strikes is to take control of Venezuela's strategic resources, notably its crude oil and resources," the government said.
Venezuelan officials appealed to the global community to condemn the operations, which it termed a "blatant breach of international norms" that placed millions of lives in peril.
Residents described feeling at least seven powerful blasts around 2 a.m. in the morning. Residents in different neighborhoods reportedly hurried into the streets outside.
"Everything shook. It was frightening. We experienced blasts and planes in the distance," commented one local.
Plumes of smoke was reported billowing from major defense sites in the city: the La Carlota air base and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where president Maduro is believed to reside.
The leader of bordering Colombia, wrote on a social platform that "Currently they are bombing Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He requested an immediate emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
Colombia, which just joined the Security Council, stated it would activate defense protocols at its shared border with its neighbor.
The reported strikes follow a extended campaign of pressure by the United States against the Venezuelan government. Beginning in last summer, there has been a major US military buildup off the country's northern coast and a number of airstrikes on vessels accused of narco-trafficking.
Venezuela's administration has declared "a state of external threat" and commanded all national defense measures to be initiated. It has also called on its citizens to protest and "repudiate this foreign aggression."
American officials and the Pentagon have not publicly commented on inquiries for clarification regarding the allegations.
