Hardline Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's New Leader.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Focused On Security and Immigration
Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely built on promises to tackle growing insecurity and radically restrict migration.
He repeatedly blamed immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.
His policy ideas envisioned controversial measures such as building detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Regional Wave
Many analysts interpret Kast's success as fitting into a larger conservative wave in South America, following this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts also frame it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are counted together.
This legislative situation may challenge his policy goals, such as a vow to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not offered specifics.
"There are several things about what a Kast government will operate that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will implement them," noted a political science analyst.
The professor continued, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However where there is much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse throughout the campaign."
