Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these medications need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
