Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The official explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to close the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, area and locality districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk arrives, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, particularly my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south, medics said.
