The gravest potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by researchers, encompassing a scorching 4C increase in mean temperatures to a two-metre increase in sea level. Another scenario predicts a drop of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.

Possible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, certain ones are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as unlikely but credible. The team explained that these models plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," said the lead researcher who led the research. "The nation has been planning in the absence of the methods to assess extreme possibilities. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for environmental results they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Severe Conditions Scenarios

Another collection of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be three times typical amounts.

The chance of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what measures will be taken to combat global warming and how the climate system will respond. This approach was compared to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for economic stability.

Critical Scenario Highlights

  • Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation fails or if vicious cycles like the tropical forests dying unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would result in intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted Arnell.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this possibility is already recognized by planners.
  • Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal reflect sunlight from warming the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Extreme

The worst-case scenarios could be utilized in planning the construction of major projects, such as housing developments, energy plants and flood defences. Understanding these future hazards could also accelerate the transition to cut fossil fuel emissions.

The study created the extreme models using a blend of real-world events, computer simulations and scientific theory. The possibilities do not take into account potential global problems like the global food shortages and resource wars.

This work was initiated as part of a national climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

The government's climate advisors has said that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the threats for severe warming. Past policy documents have been labeled being "very weak" by some observers.

An official statement commented: "Climate change is at the center of this government’s agenda, both preparing for impacts and becoming a low-carbon economy. It is essential that the UK is resilient for the consequences."
