Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
