The newcomer A debut start with the national team. Somewhat loose in possession though his whipped set-pieces caused problems. A handy pace-controller available to the boss to call upon against defensive opponents. Shown a yellow for a poorly timed tackle. Six

The midfielder Deliveries from dead balls and set-plays created chances. Had license to move on the left yet found himself in an offside position when the ball arrived with a chance to score. Granted a deserved break after an hour. Six

Jude Bellingham Played in a high spot on the right and also put in dirty work. Displayed glimpses of brilliance but dragged a shot over. Withdrawn late on by Rogers, his rival, after being booked. 7/10

Jarrod Bowen Was presented with England’s best chance before halftime, his strike smartly stopped from the opposing goalkeeper. With a teammate holding position, he had to stretch the play on the right although his balls from wide areas were hit and miss. Substituted late in the match. 6

The captain The decisive figure netting two more finishes at international level. The first a trademark poacher’s finish and the second a classy header after peeling away off his defender. Aged 32, he’s only getting better and England stand a real opportunity next summer when he's in the team. 8/10

The attacker Struggled to make an impact from the left. Was presented with a presentable chance when set up from a teammate yet Strakosha kept it out. His replacement had a greater an impact when substituted. 5
