Among every adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the dread-soaked finale of the graphically gory and highly provocative film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, bleak , often savage universe that included a few small , forlorn twinges of hope.
While Unicorn Wars appears as it came from a desire to expand animation even more, the director explained that it was more an effort to communicate a universal, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is communicated via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a popular series of lovable characters.
Being raised in a society built around warmongering and the war machine, numerous the bears are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, because of a holy book which states them they used to be masters of the forest, before the unicorns forced them out.
Some haven’t fully accepted the brainwashing, , would rather sample substances and mate in the woods.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these vivid animals display genitals , clear libidos.
For one especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the war against unicorns transforms into a path to control — and specifically to supremacy above his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively and a seeming antisocial figure , and while fear dominates his group and kills his comrades sequentially, he seizes more and more control for himself, through ever more gory, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own terror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the director stated. “However it becomes a more dramatic and melancholic movie. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars commences similar to among the whimsical films by a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing animated figures swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Then it evolves into something more like a bleaker movie from the same artist, featuring progressively visual gore and a noticeable link to the actual suffering of battle.
Ultimately, it is an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The terror that makes this a Halloween-friendly viewing kicks in much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for lovers of extreme cinema who wish to see a movie they haven’t ever watched previously, and can endure a narrative that pulls unflinching brutality.
See it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
