The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
