Zelenskyy States Putin Initiated Talks After Tomahawk Proposals

Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during his trip to Washington that Vladimir Putin's move to request talks with Donald Trump indicates the Kremlin is feeling pressure. He remarked, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to restart conversations immediately after it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks referred to recent comments about providing long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

An ex- US state department official, Dan Fried, observed, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward greater sanctions on Russia." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the likelihood of achieving a ceasefire by pressuring Moscow to get serious seem to have decreased."

This situation came after the US president had recently been hardening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's conversation with the Russian president, which the Russian government described as "extremely open and constructive."

EU Fuel Sanctions and Economic Effects

The European Union have set a requirement for energy importers into the European Union to demonstrate their fuels are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a document released on Thursday. This step is included in the EU's upcoming ban on imports of refined products made from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th restrictive measures against Russia over its war in the region.

Market analysts noted that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the possible end of India's imports of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, according to insiders knowledgeable about the matter.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would remove a big buyer of Russian oil," commented a market analyst, adding that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Security Developments and Energy Strikes

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and missile attack targeted energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing outages in eight areas. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to attack at our power facilities," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that strikes impacted the regions of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Political Reactions

Ukraine's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow showed its real attitude to negotiations through the "violence" of these attacks. "The Russian government once again opted for missiles over dialogue, turning this attack into a clear setback to ongoing diplomatic initiatives," she said.

At the same time, the European Union's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for potential conflict by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is expected to start operations initially by the 2026 timeline and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. Brussels hopes to secure the support of member state representatives at a summit next week.
